The By-Laws of the Association state (paragraph 40-B) that the purpose of this committee is “...to preserve and enhance the status of the Bay View Association as a National Historic Landmark...” The Committee is responsible for reviewing all building permit applications involving either remodeling or new construction. This helps ensure construction projects that blend harmoniously with the general architectural design of buildings and structures in Bay View.  Proposed projects must also meet standards including: 1. compatibility with the re-use of the structure; 2. avoiding destruction of distinguishing qualities; 3. recognition and respect of structural changes over time; 4. repairing rather than replacing distinguishing characteristics. Leaseholders contemplating changes to existing buildings, demolition, or new construction should obtain a copy of “Building Codes, Procedures, and Historic Conservation Guidelines for the Bay View Association.” This booklet is available at Russell Hall and  explains Bay View permit application procedures. The Architectural Review Committee will provide early assistance to leaseholders contemplating cottage site improvements. It’s important to seek the committee’s assistance to help ensure your new construction conforms to our community’s expectations.

Located on the lower level of the Wade Administration and Archives Building, the Bay View Archives contains the permanently valuable records of the Association. These include minutes of the annual meetings and trustee minutes as well as records of legal matters.  Supplementing these records are numerous photographs of many events and persons connected to Bay View.  The holdings also include recordings of nearly all sermons preached in Bay View since 1970 and programs from most musical performances for the last 100 years. Volunteer members of the Bay View Archives Commission are available to assist those wishing to research these records.  The hours of the Archives are from 1-3 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday during the months of June, July and August. Those relating to individual cottages are one of the most used areas. Owners and former owners consult the holdings to find changes that have been made to their summer homes over the years.  Cottage photos often illustrate those changes. These individual holdings also provide information on lot lines and even the list of past owners.  Additions to these cottage records are updated through materials provided by individual owners.

The library adds 300 new titles annually to the collection; emphasis remains on recreational reading for adults and children. For patron convenience we offer wireless availability and a patron computer with Internet access. We also offer coffee, doughnuts and four newspapers every morning. The extremely successful “Sundays at the Library Series” will be held at 4 p.m. each Sunday during the month of July. During the 2007 season, the library opened two new “book nooks” in the Children’s Loft.  These two areas have provided a wonderful place for both young and older children to curl up and read.  The popular Toddler Tales/Lap-Sit programs with Cate Shier Zannino will continue this season for children 18-36 months accompanied by an adult. The “Practically Perfect” Book Sale will be held from 9:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. Thursday, July 3, on the library lawn. Donated books may be brought to the library prior to the sale during library hours. The Bay View Memorial Garden overlooks Little Traverse Bay near Stafford’s Bay View Inn. In this lovely spot, you may take a walk along the paths or sit on garden benches located throughout to relax and enjoy a view of the bay and the beauty of the garden. Dedicated in 1994, the garden is consecrated as a memorial place and repository for ashes from cremations of members and friends of Bay View. It is a living symbol of our resurrection faith; all are welcome to visit as often as they choose. The garden is supervised by the Memorial Garden Committee and maintained by volunteers. We welcome you as a volunteer gardener; please contact a committee member. Donations, placement fees and memorial contributions honoring or in memory of loved ones are the Memorial Garden’s only source of funds for perpetual care, maintenance and development. Contact the Bay View Business Office, P.O. Box 583, Petoskey, MI 49770, or telephone (231) 347-6225, for a brochure describing the Memorial Garden’s gift opportunities, as well as for fees. A more comprehensive information packet is available upon request.

Morning Council meets Thursdays at 9:30 a.m. in the Woman’s Council Building.  Childcare is provided for pre-Tot Lot children. A planned program follows our social period and brief business meeting. We welcome all women who would like to meet new friends and support Bay View to join us for our opening meeting Thursday, June 26. We will gather for breakfast to re-connect and welcome newcomers. The Woman’s Council/Morning Council Opening Luncheon will be held at 12 p.m. Thursday, June 19, at the Bay View Inn.

Any leaseholder planning to build an addition to any existing structure or build a new structure on a leasehold must order a professional survey at Russell Hall. The Plat Committee will review the survey to determine if all setback and boundary issues have been satisfied as required by the By-Laws, Rules and Regulations. If the survey does not meet all the requirements or the adjacent leaseholder(s) disputes the surveyed boundary line, the leaseholder objecting may order a new survey, at his expense, in an attempt to resolve the issues. If the survey and drawing are rejected by the Plat Committee, the objecting party may appeal in writing to the Boundary Resolution Committee regarding any setback, boundary line or Bay View Rules and Regulations. The Boundary Resolution Committee’s decision shall be binding and can only be appealed to the Bay View Board of Trustees, whose decision is final. The Plat Committee may also act as a consultant to the Architectural Review Committee and superintendent in matters of land use and site development.

Mark Gilbert, chair; Lawrence R. Ternan, trustee liaison
2008 Charles Asbury, Jay Howell, James Irwin; 2009 John V. Dye, Thomas George, Elizabeth Terry, Diane Wells; 2010 Lou Atkins, Betty Maxson, Barb Turkal

On October 25, 1880, trustees decided to reserve an area as a “natural park” so the woods became an integral part of the Bay View experience. Besides economic considerations, the trustees felt that the woods should be dedicated to the recreational, educational, and spiritual needs of the community. To that end, a Woods Advisory Committee was formed in 1985 to advise trustees in their stewardship of the woods.  Today, Boys’ and Girls’ Club, groups and educational seminars take guided walks through four miles of hiking trails and walkway (see calendar section for details). The committee sponsors lectures on topics relating to the woods and periodically plans open houses. Jogging, hiking and walking are encouraged, but no bikes, please. In 1996, a plaque and rest area were dedicated in memory of Dr. William Gilbert for his efforts in preserving and protecting Bay View’s Woods for future generations.
